With all the publicity surrounding the recall of Vioxx, no one should be surprised if users of Vioxx are worried. Not only are Vioxx users scrambling for alternative pain relievers, they're left wondering if their lives are in danger.
The good news is that Vioxx can be stopped immediately with no ill effects. Experts agree that anyone currently taking Vioxx should stop and consult their doctor for advice on which drug to take in its place.
Note that the Vioxx recall was based on a study of long time users of Vioxx, people who were taking Vioxx continuously for 18 months or more. The study did not detect any increase in heart attack or stroke risk if Vioxx was taken for less than 18 months. Given the degree of uncertainty inherent in these kinds of studies, anyone who has taken Vioxx continuously for 15 months or more (or who has a pre-existing cardiac condition) should consult their doctor for a proper assessment.
